Repair by Hand Dolly Blocking & Filing

By virtue of their use inner guards have never been subject to a perfect finish. So when they are damaged, we are not looking for a perfect repair. This was particularly so on vehicles built prior to 1970 when materials were heavier (even in excess of 1 mm) and contained less carbon.

This presentation is the DVD component of a self paced, competency based, learning package. As the title suggests this is actually two demonstrations. Attention is given to flame setting, starting the weld at the edge of the sheet, tip angles, the variation in puddle control, estimating penetration from puddle size and manipulation of the filler rod. Materials used are 1 mm mild steel sheet and 1 mm filler rod.

Repair by Plastic Filling

The vehicle repair industry now mainly uses plastic filler in place of solder loading because it is generally a more economic process. However it still requires skill and care to do a good job. This demonstration sets out to inform the learner how to prepare the job, prepare the two-part epoxy filler and how to mix it, how to apply it and how to finish it. The demonstration finishes with a small segment on the companion product, the two-part epoxy putty. This is much finer in texture than the filler and as a result has some extremely useful applications.
